Parking Fields

You may park (remove from display) a field on your database design. You add will have to rebuild the files using Regenerate. Parking a field is NOT the same as deleting it from the database.

Layout 1 Panel 1

To park a field means that you will change an existing field attribute to remove it from a panel on a particular Data Layout. The field will still exist in the database and appear on the field maintenance list. It will also be available for use should you choose it as an add to any Data Layout panel. The initial distributed database design from ActionWare has sample fields that contain no data.

Parking a sample field is a typical first action in creating a new database. However, an existing field may and probably contains valid data. It may not be used any longer but the data is valuable and might be used in history for reports. We suggest that if you park an existing field that contains data that you leave all of it's attributes intact and that you make a note of when the field was parked and what the data represents. As time goes by the data will become less important and you can make a judgement as to whether or not to delete the field or to recycle it and use it for another purpose. If you recycle the field for use in the database it is recommended that you delete the data in the field first.

Using F23 while positioned on a field will remove it from the work screen. Again, if you park a field that has existed for any length of time if most likely contains valid, useful data. We suggest that you use F10 while positioned on the field to be parked and update a Note to yourself on what the data represents, Press enter to return to the work screen. Press F23 while still positioned on the desired field and it will be parked or updated to N for panel display.

to use you must position to a particular field ID on the screen. Once used it will change the panel attribute to N and effectively "park" the field meaning it will no longer display on a panel but will still exist in the list of available field ID's
